Intelligent Drum and Bass (or simply “Intelligent DnB”) is a subgenre of drum and bass that emerged in the 1990s as a more atmospheric and sophisticated alternative to the hardcore jungle scene, which dominated the British electronic scene at the time. This style is characterized by a more melodic musical approach, with atmospheres and arrangements that create a more contemplative and less aggressive listening experience compared to the classic sounds of jungle.

With a strong presence of jazz melodies and soundscapes, Intelligent DnB is built on fast breakbeats and powerful bass, balanced by harmonious arrangements and jazz and soul sampling. Led by pioneers like LTJ Bukem and his Good Looking Records label, it explored a more contemplative, listenable, “intelligent” sound that has had a profound impact on modern electronic music.
